The Govardhan Puja is a festival commemorating the time when Krishna saved the residents of Vraj from Indra’s storms. The young Lord lifted Govardhan Hill and kept it aloft on His little finger for seven days, thereby sheltering all the people and cows from the violent rains. Traditionally, we offer a mountain of food to the Lord on this day in remembrance and gratitude for all He does to protect those who take His shelter.
Young Krishna told His father Nanda to worship Govardhan Hill instead of Indra, because the hill provided all that the village needed to survive. Indra took offense and although he was aware that little Krishna was the Supreme Lord, his pride and arrogance got the best of him. Indra threatened the villagers of Goloka with seven days of violent rainstorms. Seeing the Supreme Lord’s magnificent power holding up the entire hill as easy as an umbrella crushed Indra’s pride and he fell at the Lord’s feet to beg for forgiveness.
